Torque Talk Insider: Mike Gil’s Passion-Powered Honda Fit
It’s a breezy Miami evening, and Mike Gil’s yellow 2012 Honda Fit is shining under the streetlights, its air suspension slammed low to the ground. Originally from the Bronx, New York, Mike now calls Miami home, but his car journey began long before he moved to the Sunshine State.
Growing up in the Bronx, Mike was captivated by the car culture surrounding him. “Seeing my older friends customize their rides made me realize I wanted to do that one day,” he recalls. That dream came to life with his first car, a 1993 Honda Civic EG hatchback. Today, his Honda Fit is a testament to how far he’s come.
First Mods: From the Bronx Streets to Miami’s Car Meets
When Mike bought his 2012 Honda Fit, his first upgrade was a game-changer: air suspension.
“I wanted that low stance—it just looks clean and aggressive,” Mike says. “But living in the Bronx back then, I needed the flexibility to adjust the height for those rough streets. Now in Miami, it’s perfect for cruising or showing off at meets.”
Although the stance turns heads, his personal favorite modification is his sound system.
“For me, music is everything,” he shares. “As a Dominican, music is in my blood. My car needed to reflect that vibe, so I went all out on the audio system. It’s like bringing a piece of home with me wherever I go.”
From Local Streets to the Big Stage
Mike’s Fit isn’t just a personal project; it’s a showstopper. After moving to Miami, he began entering car shows and quickly started winning awards, including at high-profile events like Tuner Evolution.
“Winning is exciting, but what really drives me is connecting with other enthusiasts,” Mike explains. “It’s about sharing the passion and showing people what’s possible with a car like the Fit.”
Nine Years Strong with Pa Lo FRECO
For Mike, car culture isn’t just about the cars—it’s about the community. He’s been a proud member of Pa Lo FRECO for over nine years, a group he describes as a second family.
“We’ve been through everything together,” Mike says. “It’s more than just a car group; it’s a support system. Whether it’s helping with a build or just hanging out, these guys have had my back since day one.”
